Rodney O. Leacock, M.D., neurointensivist at Palmetto Health Neurosurgery Associates, is board certified in neurology, neurocritical care and vascular neurology. Leacock received his medical degree from Howard University College of Medicine in Washington, D.C. and completed his neurology residency at Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He went on to complete a fellowship in neurocritical care at Wayne State University, Detroit Receiving Hospital in Detroit, Michigan and a stroke fellowship at Saint Louis University in Saint Louis, Missouri.

His clinical interests include acute ischemic stroke, intracranial and subarachnoid hemorrhage, status epilepticus, and airway protection in patients with neurological disorders. He specializes in caring for patients with complex neurological diseases.

Dr. Garcia joined Carilion in 2008 and was promoted to Section Chief of Body Imaging in 2009. She was appointed to her current position in 2011. Her major responsibility is to ensure clinical quality and safety for patients and staff. Prior to joining Carilion, Dr. Garcia was on staff at Pioneer Valley Hospital in West Valley City, Utah. She has given several presentations on radiology, imaging, radiation doses and advanced cardiac imaging with multi-detector CT. During her time at the University of Utah, she was the fourth-year Radiology Clerkship Director for the University of Utah School of Medicine. She holds medical licenses in Utah, Illinois, New Mexico and Virginia. Based on her outstanding academic performance in medical school, Dr. Garcia was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. Dr. Garcia enjoys collaborating as a member of the multi-disciplinary TAVR team.

The Director of the Institute is Professor Pankaj Sharma. In addition to being its director he is also a consultant neurologist at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust. Professor Sharma holds a University of London Chair of Neurology at Royal Holloway. He is a former British Heart Foundation Clinician Scientist at Cambridge and a Fulbright Scholar at Harvard Medical School. He holds double doctorates from both the University of Cambridge and University of London. Most recently he led the internationally renowned Imperial College Cerebrovascular Research Unit at Imperial College London.

Professor Sharma’s research seeks to use genetics, genomics and proteomics to advance human understanding of cerebrovascular disease in three key areas: prediction, diagnosis and treatment of stroke at the molecular level. He has a particular interest in the genetics of stroke in ethnic minorities, particularly South Asians and Middle Eastern populations

His research focuses on a new derivative peptide of Amyloid beta for use as immunotherapy or vaccine that trains the immune system to recognize and remove amyloid-beta in the brain as well as on a novel therapy targeting one of the major hallmarks of Alzheimer’s disease, Neurofibrillary tangles. He was an integral part of the group at NYU who developed the first vaccines (active and passive immunization) targeting tau pathology in animal models of AD. More recently, he explores the possible therapeutic potential effect of the Stem Cell in AD mouse models. He is now focusing on the development of a new therapy and immunotherapy targeting Alzheimer’s disease and other related disorders such as prion, stroke and brain Injury.

George Perry is dean of the College of Sciences and the Semmes Foundation Distinguished University Chair in Neurobiology at The University of Texas at San Antonio. Dr. Perry is recognized in the field of Alzheimer’s disease research particularly for his work on oxidative metabolism. Dr. Perry is distinguished as one of the top Alzheimer’s disease researchers with over 1,000 publications, and one of the top 100 most-cited scientists in neuroscience and behavior (Over 68,000 citations, H=131), as well as the Expertscape Leading Expert in Alzheimer’s disease. Perry serves as editor for numerous journals and is editor-in-chief for the Journal of Alzheimer's Disease. He is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Sciences, Texas Academy of Sciences, and Microscopy Society of America, a Fulbright Senior Specialist, as well as a member of the Dana Alliance for Brain Initiatives. Perry is also recognized internationally: he is a Foreign Member of the Spanish Royal Academy of Sciences, the Academy of Science Lisbon, and the Mexican National Academy of Sciences. He is also a recipient of the National Plaque of Honor from the Republic of Panama Ministry of Science and Technology

Dr. Perry’s studies are focused on the mechanism of formation and physiological consequences of the cytopathology of Alzheimer disease. The lab has shown that oxidative damage is the initial cytopathology in Alzheimer disease. They are working to determine the sequence of events leading to neuronal oxidative damage and the source of the increased oxygen radicals. Current studies focus on the: mechanism for RNA-based redox metal binding consequences of RNA oxidation on protein synthesis rate and fidelity role of redox active metals in mediating prooxidant and antioxidant properties signal transduction pathways altered in Alzheimer disease that allow neurons to evade apoptosis mechanism of phosphorylation control of oxidative damage to neurofilament proteins

Dr. Giulio Maria Pasinetti, The Saunders Family Chair and Professor of Neurology, received an M.D. from the Milan University School of Medicine and a Ph.D. from the University of Milan. He is currently the Director of the NIH funded Mount Sinai Center on the Promotion of Cognitive and Psychological Resilience and the Chief of the Brain Institute Center of Excellence for Novel Approaches to Neurodiagnostics and Neurotherapeutics. He is also a Professor of Psychiatry, of Neuroscience, and of Geriatrics and Adult Development. Dr. Pasinetti is the recipient of several academic awards including the prestigious Zenith and Temple awards from the Alzheimer's Association. Most recently, Dr. Pasinetti was awarded ''The Faculty Council Award'' for academic excellence at Mount Sinai School of Medicine and "The Charles Dana Alliance for Brain Research Award" from Dana Foundation, recognizing productivity and worldwide leadership in his field of expertise, which further emphasizes his standing as an academic role model.
